It’s important for our children to see themselves when they read books. For me, growing up I didn’t see images of characters that resembled me. However, that’s not the case anymore. My children get to grow up reading books with beautiful black kids in the stories. Here’s a few books we’re reading by Black Authors this Black History Month and honestly all year long.
1. “I Am Enough” by Grace Byers
This book reminds us all that we can overcome any obstacles that are in our way. We are perfect the way we are and no matter what we look like we are enough.
2. “Daddy’s Arms” by Fabian E. Ferguson
Many will say there’s no place like home, but I’m here to tell you there’s no place like being in your Daddy’s Arms. This book is filled with a loving story of a son’s point of view of how awesome it is to be in his dad’s arms.
3. “Dream Big, Little One” by Vashti Harrison
This book is filled with extraordinary role models like Bessie Coleman, Katherine Johnson, Raven Wilkinson and many others who did amazing things in their lives. Many of them are still trailblazing paths for our little leaders to be inspired by.
4. “Hey Black Child” by Useni Engene Perkins
This Beautiful poem celebrates and uplifts Black children and encourages them to learn, dream big and achieve their goals.
